Montrose-Waverly Chamber of Commerce

The Montrose-Waverly Chamber of Commerce’s goals are to advance the general welfare and prosperity of the Montrose-Waverly area, so that its citizens and all of its business community shall prosper. It is concerned with the promotion of all aspects of life in the area, both economic and otherwise.

Regular meetings take place at noon the third Thursday of the month, rotating every other month between a Montrose and Waverly location. The chamber of commerce is active in sponsoring community events, including the annual business expo in the fall and the Ice Festival in the winter.

The Montrose-Waverly Chamber of Commerce officers are: President Alex Roeser, Vice President Derek Groth, Secretary Sarah Bartosh DC, Treasurer Dawn Olchefske, and membership committee, Sonya and Jim Tourville.

Lions Club of Waverly

The Waverly Lions were chartered on Jan. 31, 1982.

The Lions meet the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. at the Waverly Knights of Columbus Hall.

The Lions participate in Waverly Daze, Winter Ice Festival, Thanksgiving turkey dinner, host a fish fry during Lent, and donate scholarships to HLWW students. They also support numerous civic, church and youth events, and provide the Lions Leaderdog program and their Sight First program.

Waverly Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic, fraternal service organization, whose principles are charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.

The local council was formed in the early 1900s and now has approximately 180 members. The Knights are very active in pro-life issues and participate in area parades with a pro-life float.

The Knights hold many fundraising events throughout the year to support charitable giving. They sponsor a free-throw contest for area youth, Special Olympics, award scholarships, and support religious retirement. The Knights also help the after prom committee with a pancake breakfast, and contribute to the local Cub Scouts.

The KC Hall in Waverly is available to rent for graduations, showers, or reunions. The hall seats 150. For more information, call Jim or Karen Gallagher at (763) 658-4843.

The Waverly Council 1556 of the Knights of Columbus meets at the KC Hall in Waverly. The officers’ meeting is the first Monday of the month at 7 p.m. The general meeting is the second Sunday of the month at 9:15 a.m.

Currently, the Knights of Columbus officers are: Grand Knight Ted Hanson, Deputy Grand Knight Jeff Lavigne, and financial secretary Duane Janikula.

Waverly Am. Legion Post 305

The American Legion was established in 1922 as a national organization of veterans of all wars to serve God, country, and their communities to ensure the freedoms that were fought for do not get taken away.

The American Legion sponsors the Boys and Girls State, Boys and Girls County, Legion baseball, high school programs and scholarships.

The Legion also provides military funerals for deceased veterans – priority goes to current Legion members. The local post meets the second Thursday in February through May, and September through November at Humphrey Elementary.

Officers are Commander Charlie Borrell, Adjutant Leroy Custer, and Treasurer Pat Kittock.

There are approximately 30 members. Membership dues are $30 a year. You must be an honorably discharged member of the Armed Forces who served more than 90 days during a time of conflict to join. For more information, contact Charlie Borrell, 4359 70th Street, Waverly (763) 658-4179.

Waverly American Legion Auxiliary Unit 305

The Waverly American Legion Auxiliary has approximately 42 members.

The Auxiliary participates in national and state auxiliary programs including Memorial Day, Poppy Day, Blue Service Banners, Girls' State, and forms an honor guard for deceased members' funeral.

They also support local programs including Girls' County, Waverly Summer Recreation, Waverly Boosters, Waverly United Fund, Waverly Royalty, Waverly and Montrose Red Cross bloodmobile, as well as programs for Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted such as scholarship, after prom, band, Meth Education And Drug Awareness (MEADA), classroom flags, fourth grade flag presentation education.

The auxiliary continues to add pictures of local service men and women to their collection displayed in the Waverly city offices.

To support its programs, the American Legion and Auxiliary sponsor "Turkey Bingo" each November. They also collect retired flags, and have replacements for sale.

Officers are president Norma Ogle, vice president Patty Campbell, secretary Jan Fitzpatrick, treasurer Nancy Remer, and membership Gerry Smith.

Waverly EDA

The goals of the Waverly Economic Development Authority (EDA) are to assist in the orderly economic growth and development of the city of Waverly.

The organization has been in existence since January 2000. Meetings are the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Waverly city offices building.

Waverly EDA officers are president Deb Hausladen, vice president Ken Antil, treasurer Dexter Andrews, and other officers Tim Stasson, Bob Winters, Deb Hausladen, and Todd Boelter.

Waverly Lake Association

The Waverly Lake Association is a nonprofit corporation that was formed in the early 1980s. The association’s mission is to promote better fishing, improve water quality, and enhance the natural beauty and enjoyment of Waverly Lake for now and generations to come.

During Waverly Daze in July, the annual Waverly Daze fishing contest is held.

The Waverly Lake Association has one general meeting each spring. Anyone is welcome to attend the meetings and find out the latest status of the lake and upcoming events. Citizens will learn the best ways to protect the lake’s water quality and well-being.

Since 1998, The Waverly Lake Association has participated in the Wright County Cooperative Lake Monitoring Program, in which each month, water clarity is checked and water samples are taken and analyzed in a lab for chlorophyll A (algae) and phosphorus content to detect changes in the lake. Select culverts are tested around the lake after half-inch rainfalls to check clarity of water entering the lake, as well.

The Waverly Lake Association also offers a grant-match program, where they match funds for purchasing native plants to install on or near the shore (rain garden). Native plants are encouraged to help filter run-off into the lake.

You are not required to own lakeshore to become a member of the lake association. We encourage everyone to become members to support the city's lake. Membership dues are $20 per household per year.

Waverly Boosters

The Waverly Boosters are behind several popular and successful events in the community including youth recreation and holiday parties.

The Waverly Boosters is a non-profit organization that consists of volunteers who depend on contributions from local businesses, local organizations, and private donations.

Montrose Youth Booster Club

The Montrose Youth Booster Club is a non-profit group that organizes events and programs for the youth in Montrose.

A sample of events sponsored by the boosters are the ball program in the summer, bike rodeo in May, Easter egg hunt in April, work with Montrose Lions Club to sponsor a Halloween dance, shopping with Santa in December, Valentine dance in February. The boosters also operate a concession stand during the summer to help fund some events.

The club is comprised of volunteer parents that have an interest in giving kids in the community something to do. They are always looking for new ideas, and for interested people to become a part of the group.

The booster club meets the first Monday of each month at Citizens State Bank in the community room at 7 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Area 4-H Clubs

Sunrise 4-H Club is an active club looking for new members, elementary through high school. They would like to meet and talk to you about the 4-H program, and all the opportunities it has to offer.

4-H is more than animals.

Montrose Boy Scouts Troop 312

Serving greater Montrose, the Montrose Boy Scouts Troop 312 have three goals: character, citizenship, and fitness.

Boy Scout Troop 399

Boy Scout Troop 399 serves the greater Waverly, Howard Lake, and Winsted area.

Through its patrol meetings and troop activities, the Scouts work to develop the character, citizenship, and personal fitness of area youth.

The group has seen a steady growth in membership in the past eight years. As an active troop, they participate in spring and fall camporees, develop winter survival skills, ski, canoe, fish, and take part in area civic events. Each summer they attend Many Point, which provides Scouts the opportunity for such activities as sailing, archery, tower climbing, obstacle courses, and fishing.

Annually they sell malts at the Wright County Fair, Christmas wreaths, and popcorn.

Gary Larson is scoutmaster and Chris Knott is the assistant scoutmaster.

Membership is open to any boy who has completed the fifth grade, earned the Arrow of Light Award, or is 11 years old, but not yet 18. The scouts usually meet two to four times a month. There is a yearly registration fee of $11 and a small monthly fee for each boy.

Howard Lake-Waverly Cub Scouts Pack 494

Through various Scouting activities in Howard Lake, boys are able to be involved in their community and with other Cub Scout Packs while also having fun.

Pack activities include: Good Neighbor Days parade, Waverly Daze parade, Memorial Day parade and services at the Howard Lake Cemetery, the Waverly Memorial Day event, singing Christmas carols at the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Center, Pinewood Derby, and three summer field trips to various museums and parks.

The pack’s community service project each year is to clean up lakeshore of Howard Lake before fishing season opens.

Any boy in grades one through five is eligible to join. Council registration is $9 per year and meetings are usually the fourth Thursday of the month in the little gym at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School. There is an annual sign-up in September at the school. Sign-up information is published in the Herald Journal prior to the event.

The pack is sponsored by the Waverly Knights of Columbus.

Education Minnesota Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted

Education Minnesota Howard Lake Waverly Winsted teachers are part of the Education Minnesota 70,000 members state educators union. This association advocates for teachers and students to get the best possible education that resources allow.

Officers are Duane Lichy, president, Christin LaMott, treasurer, and Dawn Kalvig, secretary. Membership fee is $120 and you must be a teacher to join.

HLWW High School After Prom Party

The HLWW After Prom Party organization was formed in the fall of 1988 to provide a safe form of entertainment for Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School juniors and seniors and their dates on prom night. The first after-prom party was in 1989, and has seen a steady increase in attendance every year since then. The students enjoy an all night party with food, fun, wonderful prizes, and entertainment.

This is a volunteer group that hosts many annual fundraisers which include a pancake breakfast during Good Neighbor Days, bake sales at the Howard Lake annual craft and art expo in November, and the Business Expo in the spring, a concession stand at home football games, and an annual fall garage sale.

We welcome anyone who is interested in helping. Watch the Herald Journal newspaper meetings column for upcoming meetings and times. Meetings take place in the commons area at the HLWW High School.

HLWW Laker Pride

Laker Pride is a Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Schools organization made up of school board members, teachers, school staff, parents and students to support students and school activities, to promote a positive school image, and to provide effective communications. Our mission statement is “To provide timely and informative communication to district residents, promoting HLWW activities that build positive Laker pride.” Laker Pride is involved in many varying efforts around school, including events such as Open House, monthly publications, "Meet the Lakers" newspaper articles, school spruce-up, and more.

HLWW FFA Alumni

The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted FFA Alumni was started in 1980 to help support the local FFA chapter and the agriculture department at the high school in Howard Lake.

The group, currently numbering about 40 members, meets the third Wednesday of each month at 8:30 p.m. in the high school ag room.

The group’s annual events include the annual auction, meeting, and banquet in December. The group has helped provide equipment for the ag shop as well as cirrucular-materials, and has acted as an advisory board for the agriculture department.

Membership dues are $15 per year, $100 for MN lifetime membership, or $150 for a national lifetime membership. Potential members must have a willingness to support high school agriculture. To join, contact the officers, advisor Jim Weninger or the high school ag department at (320) 543-3471.

Waverly Gun, Rifle, and Pistol Club

The Waverly Gun, Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. is a non-profit organization that is open to the public for numerous events. It is affiliated with the NRA and the Civilian Marksmanship program.

The club is located at 4465 Desoto Ave. SW, Waverly. The club is open most Thursday nights for trapshooting. There would be someone there that could answer any questions you may have. The phone number is (763) 658-4644. The web site is www.waverlygunclub.org.

Meetings are the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Family memberships are available.

Gun club events include trapshooting on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 10 p.m., gun training in April, youth league May through July, pistol league Wednesday evenings in May; black powder shoot in August, (carbines, rifles, pistols, cannons, and mortars), rifle sight-in in October, personal protection and concealed-carry classes. The pistol and rifle range will be open the third Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is an enclosed building, so there will be shooting rain or shine.

Lions of Montrose

A non-profit organization, the Montrose Lions participate in a variety of events through the year including Montrose Days.

The group meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Monday of each month at the Montrose Community Center.

Montrose Senior Citizens

The Montrose Senior Citizens, a new club, meet every week. Every week on Wednesdays there is a luncheon or dinner at 2 p.m. that costs only $3.25. You must call ahead for the meal.
